We want to provide an update regarding the General Membership Meeting scheduled for November 25. Agendas were distributed to all members on November 11, and reminder emails were sent in the days leading up to the meeting. Unfortunately, despite these efforts, we did not reach quorum within 15 minutes of the scheduled start time, and in accordance with our bylaws, the meeting was officially cancelled.
Under Article 6 of the Local’s bylaws:
- (d) Quorum for general membership meetings must consist of 15 members in good standing.
- (e) Should quorum not be obtained at any General Membership Meeting, the Board shall have the authority to conduct the business of the Local and will report at the next General Membership Meeting.
Because quorum was not met, the Executive Board is now required to carry out the necessary business of the Local and provide a full report at our next meeting.
One of the items scheduled for the November 25 meeting was a Notice of Motion which was posted on November 11 along with the agenda. This Notice of Motion was to introduce new bylaw language aimed at honouring members who pass away. This motion will now be brought forward for discussion and voting at our next General Membership Meeting in February.
If you have questions about the process, or about how motions and bylaw changes are handled, please reach out to your Unit Chair at your Base.
Why Your Participation Matters
General Membership Meetings are one of the most important opportunities for members to shape the direction of their Local. These meetings are where members:
- Exercise the highest authority in the Local
- Debate and vote on motions
- Hold leadership to account
- Help guide priorities, spending, and strategy
- Participate directly in democratic decision-making
When members do not attend, that authority shifts by necessity to the Executive Board, who must move business forward on your behalf under the bylaws. While the Board is committed to transparency and accountability, your voice is strongest when you show up.
We understand that attendance can be challenging. With a Local spread across three bases across Canada, connecting everyone in real time is not always easy. This is why we hold General Membership Meetings four times per year, rotating days of the week and times of day to make them as accessible as possible for all members.
Thank you to everyone who made the effort to participate on November 25. We encourage all members to join us at the next General Membership Meeting in February, where the postponed motion and other important items will be brought forward.
