On March 8 we celebrate International Women’s Day under the United Nations’ theme: “For ALL women and girls: Rights. Equality. Empowerment.” This year’s theme calls for action to unlock a future where no one is left behind.

If you are in the Calgary area this Saturday, March 8 please join us in the Silver Dart Room anytime from 10:30 to 16:30. Don’t miss out on the Bake Sale Fundraiser with delicious baked goods by Leslie Alan and Handcrafted Jewelry by Breanna Parsons.

We’re also hosting a Period Product Drive! Bring new, unopened period products to donate — tampons, Diva cups, pads, incontinence products or period underwear. Any brand, any size, any style is welcome and necessary to help end period poverty.

Proceeds from the Bake Sale, Jewelry Sale and all period product donations will go to the Women’s Centre of Calgary. This organization provides basic needs, legal and financial assistance, peer support, and other resources for women in need. The Women’s Centre of Calgary is very near to my heart, as it has directly helped some of our own team members, including myself, in need of community resources while experiencing domestic abuse.

If female anatomy cookies, earrings and tampons aren’t enough to entice you — WHERE ARE MY MENOPAUSERS AT?  According to the Menopause Foundation of Canada, the fastest growing segment of Canadian workers are those aged 45-55, an age when many women reach menopause. In the prime of their working lives, these women are the backbone of critical sectors. They provide much needed skills and are highly valued for their abilities, experience and leadership. Menopause is a universal experience that somehow remains taboo. We want to break the silence and the stigma around Menopause and give YOU the opportunity to tell us how WestJet measures up when it comes to providing a menopause inclusive workplace. Workshops will be held at 12:00 and 16:00. This is an inclusive space that welcomes cisgender and transgender women, non-binary and two-spirit people as well as male allies to attend. We’ll discuss symptoms (DYK there are over 30!), workplace challenges, and go through a checklist of criteria for workplace inclusion. The information gathered will be presented to Unifor Local 531 for consideration during bargaining in 2026.

If you have any questions, need more information, have a suggestion, or you’re unsure of anything mentioned above, please reach out to Tracy-Lynne Maclellen, Women's Advocate in YYC at womensadvocateyyc@gmail.com.

We look forward to seeing you on Saturday, March 8!
