Your Local 531 Executive Board has been busy these last few months, as we continue to grow in our new roles, support our members, attend education sessions, consult with our Unifor National Leaders, and work with the WestJet Labour Relations teams.

Mark Enns Financial Secretary, Elaine Keras YVR Trustee, and Jagreet Sandhu YYC Trustee attended a 2-day training session in Toronto at Unifor headquarters to learn more about financial management, record keeping, and reporting.  Our local has been under the direction of Unifor National and we will be transitioning to an independent local over the next few weeks. We will be responsible for our own finances, reporting to members, and banking.

The Local Executive Board will be attending a 5-day training course in June at Unifor’s Family Education Centre in Port Elgin, Ontario.  Having a local union executive equipped with the skills to do their work is important to its members.  This course is designed to explore the duties and responsibilities of the executive board members, consider various aspects of leadership and address membership involvement.

We want to thank everyone for their engagement in our communication that was sent out on March 6th regarding the Scope Work violations occurring in Calgary.  We realize it came across to members as a “heavy-handed” communication and want you to know that we are looking out for your rights when it comes to the Collective Agreement.  Our goal is to also engage with our members and have discussions with a variety of opinions and viewpoints.  We received many emails from our members in agreement and disagreement and we want to thank everyone for their feedback.  We always want our members to feel they have a voice in our union and we will always welcome respectful discussions.
