Membership Update Potential Work Stoppage May 12, 2023

Dear Unifor Local 531 Members, As we approach the weekend and the potential announcement of either a company driven lock out or strike action by the pilots, I understand that our members are feeling uncertainty and anxiety. I am writing to you today to acknowledge these concerns and provide reassurance during this challenging time. I want to assure you that your union is committed to representing your interests and advocating for your rights in any job action situation. We are closely monitoring the developments and are actively engaged in discussions with our labour relations contacts. I have had conversations with WestJet leadership and am satisfied with the planning they have in place in the event there is job action that would affect the Airports. Be assured that the Company will provide the union with prior notification of next steps in the event of work stoppage. There is clear language in our (YVR and YYC) Collective Agreement, Article 21 - Industrial Disputes and Off Duty Status in the event that job action on behalf of the Company or the Pilots affects our work. In the case of our members in Toronto, where the Collective Agreement is not in place until June 1st, I am confident that your members will receive the same fair and equitable treatment your brothers and sister will receive in the west. I pledge to keep you informed about the progress of any job action and to provide updates as soon as new information becomes available. Transparency is key and I want to ensure that you are well-informed about the steps being taken on your behalf. I understand that anxiety can arise from uncertainty about the potential impact on individual jobs, work schedules, personal travel plans and financial stability. While I cannot predict the exact course of events, please know that I am actively working to protect your rights and interests. In the event of a job action, Unifor Local 531 will provide guidance and support to minimize the impact on affected members. Please ensure you are checking your personal email throughout the weekend for any important updates or direction from the union. Additionally, I encourage you to take advantage of the resources and support mechanisms provided by the union. Our dedicated Unit Chairpersons in YVR and YYC and Bargaining Committee in YYZ are available to address any questions, concerns, or specific issues you may have. We are here to listen, provide guidance, and ensure that your voices are heard. You will find all their contact information below. I have committed to being available over the weekend and in the coming days to our members if you require assistance at any time. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me. In times of uncertainty, solidarity among union members becomes more crucial than ever. We encourage you to support one another, to foster a sense of unity, and to engage in open and respectful dialogue. Together, we can navigate through these challenges and emerge stronger as a collective.

In solidarity,
