A Message from Your Executive Board
When another employee group could potentially go on strike, it can be a worrying time for other union members. We want to provide our members with as much information as possible and how the pilots strike may or may not impact you. We hope to alleviate fears and rumours. As an Executive Board it is our goal to remind our members of your
rights, protection and benefits through having the union in place. The union is working to ensure your employment rights are protected and any negative impacts of the strike are minimized. We want to ensure our members feel supported and informed during a potentially challenging time.
Applying for EI
If there is an industrial dispute (the pilots are on strike), such as a strike or lockout, that is preventing you from working and earning an income, you may be eligible for Employment Insurance (EI) benefits in Canada. Here are the general steps you can follow to apply for EI during an industrial dispute:
1. Gather the required documents: You will need to provide some personal and employment information to apply for EI benefits, such as your Social Insurance Number, the dates you worked and your employer's information. It's important to have this information on hand before starting your application. An ROE will be issued by the Company within the required amount of time.
2. Apply online or by phone: You can apply for EI benefits online through the Government of Canada's My Service Canada Account or by calling the EI Telephone Information Service at 1-800-206-7218. If you are applying during an industrial dispute, you will need to explain your situation to the agent or in the online application.
3. Wait for a decision: After you submit your EI application, Service Canada will review your application and make a decision on your eligibility. If you are approved for EI benefits, you will receive a payment every two weeks. If your application is denied, you can appeal the decision.
It's important to note that during an industrial dispute, EI benefits may not be available to all workers. The specific eligibility requirements and the amount of benefits you can receive may also vary depending on the situation. It's a good idea to contact Service Canada for more information on your specific situation.
