More than 750 Contact Centre employees who have officially filed for certification with the Labour Board and taken an important step toward joining Unifor.
Choosing to unionize is a powerful decision. It speaks to a desire for fairness, respect, a collective voice, and a seat at the table; all values that have long guided our work as union members.
As Unifor members in YYC, YVR and YYZ, we have seen firsthand what collective action can achieve. Together, we have secured stronger protections, clearer language in our Collective Agreement, fair processes, better communication, and a union that shows up for its members. Just as importantly, we’ve built a community rooted in solidarity, advocacy, and mutual support.
Federal freeze now in effect
With the application filed, the federal freeze provisions under the Canada Labour Code are now in effect. This means the employer is prohibited from changing wages, hours, or other terms and conditions of employment without the consent of the union or the Board. This protection is designed to preserve stability and prevent retaliation or unilateral changes while the certification process is underway.
Next Steps: Canada Industrial Relations Board Review
The Canada Industrial Relations Board will review the application and the membership evidence to confirm that the legal requirements are met. WestJet will be provided an opportunity to respond to the application. This is a standard part of the process. Based on the evidence, the Board will decide the next steps. If a clear majority of support is confirmed, the Board may grant certification. If required, the Board may order a representation vote. The Board will set the voting process and timeline. Unifor will provide clear instructions and support to ensure everyone understands how and when to vote. Once certified, workers gain legal union rights and protections. The next phase will be preparing for collective bargaining, including gathering priorities and building a strong bargaining committee.
To our Contact Centre colleagues, you are not alone. We are excited to stand with you, support you through the certification process, and work together as you prepare for your first round of collective bargaining. Your voices, experiences, and priorities matter, and we look forward to building a strong agreement that reflects the work you do every day. This is an exciting moment, not just for those joining, but for all of us. When we grow, we grow stronger. Welcome to Unifor. We look forward to bargaining together soon and continuing to move forward in solidarity.
