Our History

Local 144 has a long history in the Winnipeg area. It was first granted a Charter on February 24, 1944 under the International Union of the United Auto Workers. On September 22, 1986 we became the Canadian Auto Workers. Now today we can boast that we are part of Unifor. Canada's largest private sector union.

Local 144 is an amalgamated Local. We represent Manufacturing, Transportation, and Hospitality.
Under our auspices is Griffin Canada which is a steel foundry that makes railway wheels for CNR and CPR as well as other North American railways.
One of Winnipeg's more well known entities is Princess Auto Limited. We proudly represent the Distribution Center. We also represent the parts persons and heavy duty mechanics at Mack Sales and Service.
In our Hospitality & Gaming sector we have the servers at the Fox and Hounds in the St. James Hotel, and by far the largest unit is the Operations members at Manitoba Liquor & Lotteries.
And to get you where you want to go in Winnipeg we also represent the members at Duffy's Taxi.

Local 144 meets on the fourth Thursday of each month at 5:30 p.m. at 1376 Grant Avenue
